Health Articles:
West Nile Virus
by Dr. Jake Psenka, ND
In case you haven't heard the West Nile Virus has already showed up in our area this year. The Maricopa Environmental Services Department has stepped up efforts to identify potential mosquito breeding spots, and have also said that they will begin spraying an area in north Mesa where infected mosquitoes were found. To view the county's statement click here. People with multiple chemical sensitivities should be aware of the spraying so that they can avoid contact with the larvicide being used. For more information on the West Nile Virus in Maricopa county visit the Maricopa County website: www.maricopa.gov/wnv
Last year we put out a West Nile Virus fact sheet, and it seems appropriate to do it again, so here it is:
West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause a variety of symptoms. Fortunately, most infections in humans are mild with symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, skin rashes, or swollen lymph nodes.
More severe infections are marked by high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, and, rarely, death.
Less than one percent of all people infected with the virus will develop a severe version of the illness. The elderly , the very young, and people with immune system dysfunction are at the highest risk of serious infection.
Preventative Actions:
Eliminate all standing water.
Wear protective clothing.
Avoid being outside during peak mosquito hours.
Use a mosquito repellent such as “Bite Barrier.”
There are numerous other ways to help control mosquitos in and around your home. The magazine Mother Earth News put out a good article about non-toxic mosquito control that you can view by following this link: http://www.motherearthnews.com/rec/nh/2091/
There are treatment options available if you think that you may have been bitten by an infected mosquito.
High dose Vitamin C infusions have been shown to have a strong anti-viral effect as well as immune stimulating properties.
Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation has been used since the 1940's to eliminate virus and bacteria as well as stimulate the immune system and promote the elimination of toxins.
Immune Stimulating supplements such as Proboost, Echinacea, and Thymus glandulars can help to keep your immune system as strong and functional as possible.
